BHRAMAM

We are so used to south films being remade in Hindi. But this week on Amazon Prime video we have Ravi K Chandran’s Malayalam remake of the Hindi film Andhadhun. This black comedy crime thriller by Sriram Raghavan has already been made in Telugu (Maestro) and the Tamil version will also release soon. Now the thing with remakes is that people already know what’s in store so in that sense there isn’t much of a surprise element. Also the original had some great music and brilliant performances. Brahmam remains mostly faithful to the Hindi original though some bits have been tweaked to match the southern sensibilities. The story is about a pianist, Ray Mathews (Prithviraj Sukumaran), who pretends to be blind to get more opportunities. Things spiral out of control and he becomes the prime witness to the murder of yesteryear actor Uday Kumar (Shankar) by his wife Simi (Mamta Mohandas) and her lover Dinesh (Unni Mukundan).

HOUSE OF SECRETS: BURARI DEATHS

11 members of the Chundawat family were found dead under mysterious circumstances at their home in Burari, New Delhi. Was it murder? Or suicide? The deaths shocked the entire nation and generated several conspiracy theories. Director Leena Yadav and co-director Anubhav Chopra explore this bizarre case and also provide insight into the workings of a traditional Indian family. The three-part docu-series has music by AR Rahman and is a psychological and sociological took at trying to decode how the incident that flummoxed an entire nation played out. You can watch it on Netflix.

AMONG THE STARS

Directed by Ben Turner, this six-part documentary series takes a closer look at the challenges of space travel and presents intimate access into the world of NASA. We meet Astronaut Captain Chris Cassidy is on a quest to get back in his spacesuit for one last mission to fly to the International Space Station. One gets behind the scenes access into NASA and the life-risking missions undertaken. What do astronauts go through, how is it working in outer space. As the team embark on a mission to repair the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, a $2 billion science experiment designed to discover the origins of the universe we get unprecedented access through video diaries filmed by the space crews with explainers and interviews with scientists and engineers. On Disney+ Hotstar it's quite a riveting watch.

ITLU AMMA

National award-winning director Uma Maheshwar Rao C Telugu film is about a widowed mother‘s fight against a heartless system to find out the truth and look for her son. Taking on powerful men and a system that exploits, this is a touching tale about a mother’s love for her child and her commitment to social justice. Featuring Revathi, Posani Krishna Murali and Ravi Kale in prominent roles you can watch it On Sony Liv.

I CARRY YOU WITH ME

Directed by well-known documentary filmmaker Heidi Ewing this decades-spanning romance begins in Mexico between an aspiring chef (Armando Espitia) and a teacher (Christian Vázquez). Their lives restart in incredible ways as they must make a dangerous journey to New York City for a better life with dreams, hopes, and memories. A heartbreaking and devastating story of a gay Mexican couple imprisoned by societal prejudice it beautifully manages to capture the immigrant experience and their complicated and loving relationship blending documentary and narrative features. It’s on BookMyShow.
