Guru, this Malayalam fantasy drama was not well received at the box office when it was released in 1997, but won several accolades. It was also India's first Malayalam film to be sent to the Oscars under the category of Best Foreign Language Film. Featuring an ensemble of Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi, Madhupal, Sreelakshmi, Sreenivasan, and Nedumudi Venu, the film revolves around Raghuraman, played by Mohanlal, a religious extremist who is magically transported to another fantasy realm.
In this new world, he stumbles upon a society of blind people who do not believe in sight. The very idea of sight is deemed blasphemous by the king. Raghuraman soon learns of their culture and gains a new perspective about life and civilization in general. He is compelled to find a cure for their blindness and help overthrow their ignorant king.
Directed by Rajiv Anchal, the film is rich in philosophical subtext which is achieved through imagery and symbolism. The gripping narrative that accompanies the socio-political message in the film makes it an underrated classic and one that was far ahead of its times.
If you haven't been able to watch this film yet, do so now streaming exclusively on MX player.
