The winner of the 2022 Oscars for Best Picture, CODA, is a heartwarming tale about a young woman named Ruby, a ‘child of deaf adults’ or CODA, overcoming various hurdles. The Apple TV+ original film garnered praise for its nuanced depiction of people with disability and how it has used humour to tell a compelling story about love and family. The film also won an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actor category, for Troy Kostur’s standout performance.

  1. To prepare for the role of Ruby, actress Emilia Jones learned American Sign Language, took singing lessons, and also learned how to operate a fishing trawler, which took nearly nine months
  2. Troy Kotsur, who essays the role of Frank Rossi, became the first deaf male actor to win an Academy Award. Coincidently his onscreen wife Marlee Matlin was the first deaf actress to win an Oscar. She won it 35 years ago for the film Children of a Lesser God in the year 1987. This makes Kotsur and Matlin, the only deaf actors in history to win an Oscar..
  3. At the Oscars this year, the film earned the distinction of being the first-ever movie exclusive to a streaming platform to win the Oscar for Best Picture. While Netflix films such as The Irishman and The Power of the Dog have received Best Picture nominations, Apple TV+ beat Netflix to the prize.
  4. The film’s grounded realism meant that the film’s fishing scenes were real. Therefore the cast and the crew were required to follow the local fishing rules. They were also forced to remove a crew member at one stage so that the boat’s capacity did not exceed 10, as per the local regulations.
  5. CODA is the first film since 1932 to win Best Picture with the fewest nominations. The 1932 film Grand Hotel, had just a single nomination for its win, while CODA had three.

If you haven't watched this Oscar award-winning flick , then do so its streaming exclusively on Apple TV+
