Helmed by Mike Flanagan, Ouija: Origin of Evil is a prequel to the 2014 film Ouija. This 2016 film garnered critical acclaim for its well-executed story and unhinged plot twists in the end that perfectly sync with the Ouija franchise. Starring Elizabeth Reaser, Lulu Wilson, Annalise Basso, and Henry Thomas in lead roles, Ouija: Origin of Evil, as the name highlights, traces the horrors of a demonic possession that traps a desperate family.
The plot revolves around a widow and her family as they reel under the loss of their patriarch, Roger. Soon, things take a dreary turn when Alice and her daughters mistake an evil connection with Marcus as Roger’s spirit via an Ouija board. Alice uses the spiritual board in her phony seance business but grapples to survive the consequences when her youngest daughter, Doris, is possessed by the demonic spirit. Here’s a breakdown of the riveting ending that makes this supernatural horror film a must-watch.
When Doris’ strange behaviour makes her elder sister Paulina (Lina) worried, she seeks the help of her school principal Fr Tom, and shows him how Doris wrote weird things in Polish, which she never knew. In a series of twists, Doris unleashes her inner evilness when she brutally kills Lina's new boyfriend Mikey, along with Father Tom, when he arrives to help her and the Zander family.
In the climax, the real identity of the demonic spirit is revealed to be Marcus, who was the victim of the illegal experiments conducted in a secret room inside the Zander family’s basement. Marcus, along with other evil entities, possesses Doris and attacks everyone coming their way. In a plot twist, Roger’s spirit helps his daughter Lina as it ideates her to end Doris’ miseries by driving away the evil forces.
In a spine-chilling ending for Ouija: Origin of Evil, Lina is seen in a psychiatric hospital, creating her own Ouija with blood and begins to write letters and symbols. Later, a doctor watches her through a window without knowing that the demonic Doris is creeping across the ceiling towards him. The unsettling ending hints that Doris is still roaming free and won’t settle without shedding blood.
Lina shuts off Doris’ evilness by sewing her mouth shut. Alice is also stabbed to death by Lina when she gets possessed. However, she ends up killing Doris unwittingly and ends up losing her mind as she struggles to deal with the overwhelming guilt. A bittersweet scene showcases Doris reuniting with her father Roger in the other world.
The elder daughter, Paulina, is the sole survivor of the Zander family. In a post-credits' scene, flash forward to 47 years later, and it is shown that an elderly woman in a mental institute gets a surprise visitor who claims to be her niece. Thus, linking the prequel seamlessly to the 2014 horror film Ouija.
It is streaming on Netflix.
