Pachinko season 2's first episode has been released and is already loved by all who have viewed it. While we wait till next Friday for the second episode to launch, here's a recap of what has happened in the first episode of the series and what is expected to happen in the second episode. All we can tell you is that it will be the tale of grandmother-grandson, played by Kim Min-ha and Jin Ha, respectively.

Pachinko 2 is set in World War II times

Sun-ja (Min-ha) is in Japan when World War II is taking place (in the 1940s). She continues selling kimchi while facing peak racism because she is a Korean-origin living in Japan (Korea was about to find liberation from Japanese colonies at that point). Despite that, she undergoes military training, which was a mandate for the citizens who had to prepare for invaders.

Sun-ja is almost arrested, and Han-su saves her

Although Sun-ja sells kimchi, it is not enough to make ends meet, especially because of the harsh times. Thus, when her friend Jiyun (Jeong Sori) suggests that they should sell illegal rice wine in the black market, Sun-ja gives in to provide for her kids who are surviving on worm-riddled rice rations.

Unfortunately, she gets arrested while doing so. Although every woman arrested has to serve time in prison for weeks or months, Sun-ja gets bailed. This is owing to her connection with Han-su (Lee Min-ho), the father to her son.

Han-su warns Sun-ja of the upcoming bombings

If you remember, two bombs dropped by the Americans on Japan's Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended World War II. Han-su, who is working closely on building supplies, overhears how the Americans plan to drop a bomb on Japan. Thus, he warns Sun-ja, but she refuses to leave her husband in the big cities and go countryside.

Solomon's story

Solomon has found a way out after what happened in season 1. He has opened a business but struggles with finding investors because there are rumours of him conning investors. Thus, he is forced to accept help from his family.

Given how he is struggling at the time when Japan's economy is about to hit an all-time low, Solomon is frustrated. He maintains peace till a man turns racist to his grandmother, Sun-ja (Youn Yun-jung). She wishes to distract Solomon and thus asks him to pick up a cake for her. That is when the baker passes a remark on Sun-ja about how she cannot speak Japanese (when in reality, she does indeed speak in Japanese as much as Korean). In frustration, he tears apart the cheque of USD 700,000 which his father gave him during the opening of pachinko parlour. Soon after, Solomon passes the comment, "I cannot always feel sorry for you," for his grandmother Sun-ja. She happens to be the reason why Solomon did not strike the deal with the old lady in season 1, which marked the beginning of his struggles.

Pachinko 2 episode 2 will be about Sun-ja's story parallelling Solomon's

Of course, this does not come as a surprise, since Pachinko's concept is of the struggles within the Baek family. Like Sun-ja (Min-ha)’s arrest was linked to Solomon's story, Solomon's reaction is bound to give the viewers a glimpse into a similar situation Sun-ja faced during her growing up years.

Pachinko season 2 episode 2 will release on Friday, August 30. New episodes of the show will be out every Friday on Apple TV+ till October 11.
