After premiering at the Toronto Film Festival in 2021, the Malayalam film Paka (River of Blood) is getting its OTT premiere. Yes, the upcoming film is streaming on SonyLIV starting July 7, 2022. Paka is set against the backdrop of the banks of a river that contains more blood than water. A couple in patriarchal rural India vows to halt the cycle of retaliation. The bloodthirsty river is there to watch it all.
Nithin Lukose is the writer and director of Paka (River of Blood). In addition to Vinitha Koshy, Nithin George, Abhilash Nair, Jose Kizhakkkan, Athul John, Joseph Manikkal, and Mariyakkutty, who play supporting roles, the movie also stars Basil Paulose in the major role. Anurag Kashyap and Raj Rachakonda are the film's producers. The movie had its world premiere in the Discovery Section at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. Additionally, it has been chosen for the competition section of the Red Sea International Film Festival in 2021.
Earlier, in an interview with OTTplay, sound designer Nithin, who has contributed to films including Thithi, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar, and Ambili, explained that the story is inspired by the tales his grandmother told about her family's relocation to Wayanad and the conflicts that resulted between the locals. They also discuss family conflicts and feuds in the film. The region and its people drew him to making Paka more than the plot did.
Nithin claimed that after settling on the concept, he started writing the script for the movie around 2018–19. At that time, he had also served as the sound designer for the Raj R.-produced Telugu film Mallesham. Thus, when he discussed the concept with the producer, he liked it and suggested that they make a short film out of it.
Nithin assembled a crew of FTII classmates, including cinematographer Srikanth Kabothu, editor Arunima Shankar, and a few Bangalore Film School alums, very rapidly. Then, they moved all this high-tech gear to a village in Wayanad and started filming it.
