Malayalam actor Joju George made a stellar directorial debut with the action-packed film, named Pani, in 2024. The noted Malayalam actor also starred in the lead role of Giri in the film, which had a relatively good run at the box office. Joju George recently spoke about the reception that Pani received in theatres and wondered if a different director’s name would have led to a better response. Pani, helmed by Joju George, was released in theatres in November 2024. In a recent chat with The New Indian Express, Joju George opened up about Pani, saying that certain people were not happy with the film. While stating that he invested two years of his life and Rs 18 crore in the film, Joju said that he felt it deserved more appreciation.

Joju had a humble beginning in Malayalam cinema, toiling in small and uncredited roles before getting supporting characters and then finally headlining films.
“Some people find it difficult to accept my success,” he said, explaining that they had seen him struggle as a junior artiste earning Rs 50.
“Don’t you think the movie would have received a better response had the director’s name been different? That’s worth considering,” he remarked.
The actor-director also noted that the film had won appreciation from the Tamil industry.
Pani is available for streaming on SonyLiv via OTTplay Premium in multiple languages. Sagar Surya and Junaiz VP play two other key roles in the film along with Abhinaya. Prashanth Alexander, Chandini Sreedharan, Bitto Davis, and Abhaya Hiranmayi are also part of the film. Apart from directing and starring in it, Joju also wrote the film, which is set in Thrissur.
The action-packed Pani follows two youngsters, Don and Siju, who seek to make it in the criminal world of Thrissur. When their paths cross with that of Giri, chaos breaks out.
