Pedro Almodovar’s latest film, Parallel Mothers starring Penélope Cruz impressed across the film festival circuit. The Spanish romantic drama is not set to hit theatres in India on March 11.

PVR Pictures took to Twitter to announce the news with moviegoers along with the film’s poster. The poster features Cruz hugging co-star Milena Smit, but with a little twist in Almodovar’s style.

Almodovar’s 22nd feature film, Parallel Mothers tells the tale of two mothers who find themselves in a hospital room for the first time. While the film focuses on motherhood, it also has a subplot about the Spanish Civil War.

Parallel Mothers is an engaging tale with its fair share of suspense, while also adding elements of drama, subtle comedy and a few twists that will catch you off guard. And the movie also produces this in all the ways you would expect from a Pedro Almodovar movie.” reads the film’s review on OTTPlay.

Parallel Mothers premiered as the opening film at the 78th Venice International Film Festival in September last year. Cruz also bagged the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the festival. The film has also won two nominations at the 94th Academy Awards for Best Actress (Cruz) and Best Original Score (Alberto Iglesias).

Apart from Cruz and Smit in the lead, the film also stars Israel Elejalde, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Julieta Serrano, Rossy de Palma, Pedro Casablanc, Adelfa Calvo, and Ainhoa Santamaría in supporting roles.

Cruz was last seen in Simon Kinberg’s American spy thriller The 355, which received negative reviews. She is waiting for the release of On the Fringe, a Spanish-Belgian thriller film directed by Juan Diego Botto.
