Paramount Plus will soon make its way to India after it's launched in South Korea and the UK in June this year.
Paramount President and CEO Bob Bakish, in the first quarter Earnings Report call, said that the streamer will be introduced in India in partnership with Viacom18.
The agreement was recently announced by Bodhi Tree Systems, an investment firm backed by James Murdoch and former Star India CEO and Walt Disney Asia Pacific president Uday Shankar last year, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The agreement includes an investment of $1.78 million in Viacom18.
In the same call, Bakish also revealed plans for Paramount Plus to expand in European territories such as Italy, France and Germany in the second half of this year.
With the availability of Paramount Plus, users will be able to access the Star Trek universe, new seasons of the Yellowstone series, South Park, and kid-friendly content like SpongeBob SquarePants, PAW Patrol and Rugrats.
The streamer's library will include TV shows and movies from Paramount associated properties like SHOWTIME, BET, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Pictures and the Smithsonian Channel with homegrown content.
Paramount Plus is among the latest streaming platforms to make its way into the Indian market after Lionsgate Play. There are also reports that HBO Max is also going to debut here soon. However, in spite of the big title offerings, these foreign streamers may have to face stiff competition from homegrown streamers that are creating quality content at a robust pace.
