Parasakthi censor certificate issue delays ticket bookings; a Jana Nayagan deja vu?

While it has not yet fully sunk in that Jana Nayagan, the much-anticipated Tamil film starring Vijay, has postponed release from January 9, uncertainty looms over the release of another big-ticket film, Parasakthi, which is slated for January 10. What is interesting is how both the film has faced/facing the brunt of censor formalities delay, besides how political undertones and ideologies might have a major role to play.

Parasakthi ticket bookings yet to open; Will it see Jana Nayagan’s fate?

With only two days to go for release of Parasakthi, the advance bookings for the film is yet to begin. The reason being the uncertainty over censor certificate. As per an NDTV report, the CBFC is yet to issue the censor certificate for Parasakthi. Further, the authorities had given 23 edits to the film after watching it on Wednesday. The board had asked Parasakthi director Sudha Kongara to remove a few portions that were about the anti-Hindi agitations. However, the filmmaker has approached the Revising Committee.

For those who don’t know, Parasakthi is about the anti-Hindi agitations that took place in Tamil Nadu in the 1960. The language imposition has been part of Tamil Nadu’s political history with the state being one of the major parts of India to be against Hindi. This can have a political implication given CBFC comes under union government.

It is a déjà vu moment, given only a day back Jana Nayagan which was set to release on January 9, faced a similar issue with CBFC delaying the censor formalities. The Vijay-starrer, which is touted to be star’s final film, had plenty of political undertones, given the actor himself will be making electoral debut in a few months. Even as the makers took up the case to High Court given they had submitted the film for censor in December, the court had reserved its orders until Friday, making the team defer the release.

With Parasakthi set for January 10 release, there is still a day to go for the makers to secure censor certificate. If the team secures it within Friday, the Sivakarthikeyan film is all set to go. However, if not, period drama will face the same fate as Jana Nayagan.
