It is now officially confirmed that it is going to be head-on collision between two big-ticket Tamil films in January for Pongal 2026. The makers of Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi advanced their release date to January 10 from 14, thus coming a day after the release of Jana Nayagan, the last Tamil film actor Vijay will be starring in.

December was particularly not favourable for Tamil cinema, after films like Vaa Vaathiyaar and Love Insurance Kompany which were set to release this month, postponed due to financial and last-minute troubles. This has left the theatres in Tamil Nadu to loom over in dark, given it was a dull period. Even as films like Sirai and Retta Thala, are set to grace big screens for Christmas this weekend, no major films have hit theatres this month.
Now, with January, the case is not like December. The festive season of Pongal witness major releases, and 2026 will also see two major Tamil films; Jana Nayagan and Parasakthi. While the former is the farewell film for Vijay and is one of the much-anticipated big-ticket film, Parasakthi starring Sivakarthikeyan, also boasts some well-known stars. On the other hand, no other major Tamil films have announced their arrival in January 2026, giving a huge leeway for both Parasakthi and Jana Nayagan to dominate the box office. So far, no Tamil films have announced for Republic Day. While some small-ticket films are expected to come in January, no noteworthy titles have been confirmed as of now.

Jana Nayagan, directed by H Vinoth, is said to be remake of Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari. It stars Vijay, Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Priyamani, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and others in prominent roles, with music scored by Anirudh Ravichander.
Meanwhile, Parasakthi is a period drama helmed by Sudha Kongara and will be about anti-Hindi agitations that took place in Tamil Nadu in the 1960s. The cast includes Sivakarthikeyan, Ravi Mohan, Atharvaa and Sreeleela. While Parasakthi is Sivakarthikeyan’s 25th film, it is 100th for music composer GV Prakash.
