After 18 years in the film industry, Parvathy Thiruvothu has assembled an enviable filmography to her credit, much of which has come to her in Malayalam. And while she dabbles with Tamil and Hindi also occasionally, the one industry she tested and then left without a trace is Kannada cinema. Between 2007 and 2013, Parvathy was a part of 4 Kannada films, debuting with the late Puneeth Rajkumar’s Milana, which she followed up with Male Barali Manju Irali, Prithvi (also with Puneeth) and Andar Bahar with Century Star Shivarajkumar.

During a recent interview with Filmfare, Parvathy addressed why she gave up on Kannada films. Her Sandalwood debut came early on in her film career, a time when she was doing movies in which she would either fall in love or fall out of love; be sad about love or not having love; wait for love or chase love.
Milana, she says, was about getting married against her wishes and the husband helping her find her boyfriend. Early on, she realized that the Kannada cinema way of performance is different; in the sense that it is slightly exaggerated. Kannada cinema, she says, shocked her, as she cites an example of being asked to give 5% more of an expression. This was very unlike what she doing back home in Kerala, where everything had to be subtle.

But what really got to her was that all that the roles demanded of her was to smile, look pretty, fall in love or feel incomplete because of a lack of a partner. There was nothing else there, so she stopped doing Kannada films after a while. She did 4 Kannada films and all were about love only and that’s when she realized that if she wanted to have some semblance of difference, she had to stay in Malayalam cinema.
