Parvati Nair is returning to Kannada cinema nearly a decade after her last, Vascodigama, with a release on February 7, called Mr Rani. The film sees the actress reunite with Vascodigama director Madhu Chandra, while Deepak Subramanya plays the title character. Mr Rani is a film about an aspiring actor, Raja, who ends up playing an actress and rises to the numero uno spot. Parvati is the rani in his life.
“I had worked with Madhu Chandra sir on Vascodigama, which was also a different script and revolved around education. We were not in touch with each other for many years, when, out of the blue, he called me about a role in Mr Rani. He told me the concept and I asked him who’d be the protagonist, to which he said it would be a newcomer. Truth be told, I was not keen to work with a newbie, but Madhu Chandra insisted that I hear the story,” says Parvati, speaking to Kannada Filmistry.
Over the next one hour, the actress says that she was in rapt attention, even though she was traveling and usually tends to get distracted. “This was one of the few scripts where I was all ears throughout. It was so interesting and I kept thinking that if it sounds so good as a story, how will it translate onscreen. That was what got me hooked to the project,” she says.
Parvati is quick to add that the basic concept apart, the humour in the narrative also appealed to her, which, she thinks, will work for audiences too. “I was not bored ever; the screenplay is such that it is engaging and will have viewers eager to know what’s next. There’s a little bit of a thriller element too, amid all the fun moments that play out,” she says.
