Pathu Thala OTT release: All you need to know about this Simbu-starrer

Amazon Prime Video on Saturday announced that the latest Tamil movie, starring Simbu in the lead, will premiere on its platform on April 27 . Written and directed by Obeli N. Krishna, the movie also stars Gautham Karthik in one of the roles. 

Pathu Thala is the official remake of the Kannada hit Mufti. While Krishna has retained the core idea of the original, he has made significant changes to the Tamil remake. For example, in the Kannada original, the plot is about a daredevil cop who infiltrates an enemy camp to take out a dreaded gangster named Bhairathi Ranagal. However, in the process, the cop finds out there are more sides to Bhairathi Ranagal and he's not just a simpleminded criminal, who kills people for money.

As the title Pathu Thala suggests, in the movie Gautham's young cop character Shakthivel also finds out there are multiple sides to Simbu's AG Raavanan. On the outside AGR might look like he's a ruthless crime boss, but he also has redeeming qualities. 

Also, the Tamil remake is an investigative thriller at the heart. The film follows the investigation of the disappearance of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Santhosh Pratap. And Shakthivel is tasked with uncovering the truth behind the sudden and mysterious disappearance. And this angle is not there in the original Kannada version. 

“Despite being an adaptation, Pathu Thala is very different from the original. With characters as complex as our protagonists, Silambarasan TR and Gautham Karthik have played their parts brilliantly, which made my job as a filmmaker that much easier. While the storyline is engrossing, it’s the characters that keep you hooked till the very end. Just like Ravana, they’re not all bad, but have shades of morality, a facet still redeemable which makes them even more captivating to the audience," said Krishna. 

In Pathu Thala, Simbu has reprised the role which was originally played by Kannada superstar Shivarajkumar. Before the release of the movie, Simbu had revealed how he was hesitant to accept the role given he knew he can't match Shivarajkumar's acting in the role. He also noted that he was in a dilemma to accept the movie when the director asked him to gain some weight for his character. 

Considering Simbu's challenging journey to regain his fitness, he was hesitant about the prospect of putting on weight again. But, he later took on the project as a challenge and did it. 

Pathu Thala also stars Priya Bhavani Shankar, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Kalaiyarasan, Teejay Arunasalam and Anu Sithara.
