On the surface, Dobaaraa seems to have succumbed to the box office slump facing Bollywood today. As per latest reports, the film has managed to mint approximately Rs 5 crores at the box office, seven days after its release. But actor Pavail Gulati, who shared the screen with Taapsee Pannu in the film, feels differently. The former recently opened up about the film’s response among audiences and its box office performance.
In conversation with Hindustan Times, Pavail revealed that since the film was ‘very low budget’, the makers had recovered the costs earlier. The actor said that the fact that the film was still earning the kind of money it did despite being released on very few screens, was a blessing in itself. “Now whatever is happening is sone pe suhaga”, said Pavail.
The actor said that even big producers were not able to figure out what was keeping audiences away from theatres these days. Acknowledging that the industry is going through a change at the moment, the actor likened it to similar changes in the past.
Theatres had similarly suffered in the past when VHS and television were introduced, and the pattern seemed to repeat itself with the advent of OTT, remarked Pavail. The actor said that new things had a way of disrupting the prevailing system, which the industry was witnessing at the moment. But after a while, the system eventually found its footing. Bollywood seems to be going through a similar phase, but Pavail is confident that everything will be fine soon.
Pavail also added that he was very happy with the response the film was getting from viewers. He said that a lot of the people who watched the film told him they loved it. Their responses were the biggest validation for the makers.
After its theatrical run, Dobaaraa will be available to stream on Netflix.
