All We Imagine As Light, the first Indian film to win the Cannes Film Festival’s Grand Prix award, is gearing up for its grand theatrical release. As per the latest updates, popular production banner Spirit Media, which is founded by Rana Daggubati, has acquired the exclusive rights from Chalk & Cheese films to distribute the Payal Kapadia directorial in India. After winning the Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix, All We Imagine as Light is now creating waves as a top contender for the Academy Award for Best International Film.
“After garnering love from audiences at festivals abroad, we are thrilled to bring Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light to Indian viewers. Our partnership with this incredible film is a step forward in our efforts to bring compelling and moving stories from different parts of the country to audiences everywhere,” stated distributor Rana Daggubati, in a recent press release.
For the uninitiated, Rana Daggubati and Spirit Media have been actively supporting Indian independent films for quite some time now. The list includes many acclaimed films, including Bommalata, C/o Kancharapalem, Charlie777, and the recent independent Telugu film 35 – Chinna Katha. With All We Imagine as Light, the production banner is planning to bring compelling and diverse stories to Indian audiences.
All We Imagine As Light, written and directed by Payal Kapadia, is an evocative film that captures the intertwined lives of two women in Mumbai. Nurse Prabha's routine is upended when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband, reigniting old emotions. Anu, her younger roommate, has been dealing with the frustration of finding privacy in the crowded city to be with her boyfriend. Their journey for solace takes them to a peaceful beach town, where they finally find the space for their desires to unfold.
The film, which features Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Hridhu Haroon, Chhaya Kadam, Azees Nedumangad, and Anand Sami and is produced by Thomas Hakim and Julien Graff of France’s petit chaos along with Zico Maitra & Ranabir Das from India’s Chalk and Cheese & Another Birth respectively as co-producers. The film will be distributed in North America by Janus and Sideshow, who have previously distributed many Academy award winning films.
