The popular clown from the hit horror film franchise, It is coming back to the screens. But this time, it returns with a prequel series on HBO Max. The project is reportedly in the works currently.
The series has been titled at the moment, “Welcome to Derry.” It will be set in the 1960s, leading up to the events of the 2017 movie, It: Part One. The film, directed by Andy Muschietti had a sequel which was also directed by him. The film is based on Stephen King's horror novel. Now, the series to reported to have the origin story of Pennywise the Clown.
The film's director Andy Muschietti will be executive producing the series along with Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs. There are reports suggesting that the Muschiettis and Fuchs are the brains behind the show's story and that Fuchs wrote the script. Andy will also be directing the pilot episode of the show. A writers’ room is now open. The project is being backed by Warner Bros. Television, with WB having produced the two films.
The two 'It' films earned over $1.1 billion collectively worldwide. It: Chapter One starred Jaeden Lieberher and Bill Skarsgård, while the sequel has Bill Skarsgård reprise his role as Pennywise the Clown. It also stars Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, Isaiah Mustafa, Jay Ryan, James Ransone and Andy Bean. The second film of the two-part adaptation was set in 2016, 27 years after the events of the first film. The films tell the story of The Losers' Club, a group of seven outcast kids who are terrorized by this supernatural being, It, coming out of the sewers.
'It' was earlier adapted into a two-part mini-series for ABC in 1990. The horror drama featured Tim Curry as Pennywise.
