Malayalam web series Perilloor Premier League (PPL), which was released on Disney+ Hotstar last week, has already been lauded by the audience across languages. The comedy series, which revolves around a series of hilarious incidents in the titular village after an unlikely candidate becomes its panchayat president, could also be the front-runner for the first-ever Malayalam web series to get its second season greenlit by the streaming platform.
In an exclusive chat with OTTplay, PPL writer Deepu Pradeep reveals if there will be a second season for the series starring Nikhila Vimal, Sunny Wayne, Vijayaraghavan, Ashokan and Aju Varghese, and what to expect from it.
“For web series, there’s a higher possibility of a second season,” says Deepu. “Also, we aren’t just focusing on a single protagonist’s story. There are several characters and we have so many other stories about them to tell. So, there’s definitely a chance for another season.”
The first season of PPL, which has seven episodes, is based on 14 stories from Deepu’s own blog , and the writer promises more quirky characters in the second season of the show, which was helmed by Praveen Chandran.
Ask Deepu about his affinity for creating quirky tales with a suburban setting and the writer, who has also scripted Tovino Thomas’ Ajayante Randam Moshanam and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Guruvayur Ambalanadayil, tells us, “I am someone who lives in a village and that’s probably why I can come up with more such stories. Also, I enjoy creating worlds; there’s a thrill to it. The best way to convince the audience is to entice them into a setting, and that’s an essential part of storytelling. In PPL, we have tried to tell the story of the village Perilloor more than a hero or a heroine. So, it’s as big a character as its protagonists.”
PPL marks Disney+ Hotstar’s third Malayalam web series after Aju Varghese and Lal’s Kerala Crime Files and Nithya Menen and Sharafudheen’s Masterpeace. The platform has also greenlit Madhuvidhu, starring Suraj Venjaramoodu, 1000+ Babies featuring Rahman and Neena Gupta and Pharma, which will mark Nivin Pauly’s web series debut.
