Earlier this week, a Kannada short film called Pinni dropped on actor-filmmaker Rishab Shetty’s production house’s Youtube page. The thing about Rishab Shetty is that he is known to support talent in whatever way he can, whether it is through his directorial films, production ventures, or by just lending his name to it as presenter. In short film maker Bhuvan Sathya’s case, Rishab gave him a platform to ensure that his presentation finds a larger audience.

Bhuvan’s film is called Pinni, his lead character’s nickname. The film, which was recently screened at the Bengaluru International Short Film festival is about Prajwal, better known as Pinni, who lives with his grandfather. Pinni’s grandfather has certain expectations of him – to do well in Class 10, 12, get into an engineering stream, ace that and get a good job. While Pinni more or less follows this trajectory, even though he does not move from one to the other with flying colours, he even considers an IT job despite being a mechanical engineer.

How he eventually gives up all these ‘dreams’ that were built on the expectations of others and decides to do what he truly enjoys is what the film is all about. Pinni is also a film about not attaching stigma to any field of work and dispels the notion that blue colour jobs are not meant for people equipped for white collar professions. After all, whatever you do, you should be happy doing it.

Pinni has been written and directed by Bhuvan, who has also filled in as editor. The film, which stars Santhosh T Ninasam, Manjunath NM, Ranjan Shetty and Panam P Jain has also been at the New York Indian Film festival and the Chicago South Asian Film Festival, before its more recent outing at BISFF. The film can be accessed on the Rishab Shetty Films page on Youtube.
