Basil Joseph has once again proved that he is a terrific actor with his performance in Ponman, which is essentially an underdog’s tale of resilience. Basil Joseph essayed the role of PP Ajesh, who lends gold jewellery for the marriage of Steffi Graf (brilliant Lijomol Jose). However, when the gold is not returned as promised, Ajesh sets out to retrieve it, come what may. Even while closely following Ajesh's brave fight to reclaim his gold, Ponman also beautifully weaves in a romantic spark between Ajesh and Steffi, that remains largely unspoken. But do Ajesh and Steffi end up together in Ponman's climax? Read on to know what happened in the final scenes of Ponman, which is based on GR Indugopan's novel. (Be wary of spoilers).
Set in Kollam, the Jyothish Shankar directorial follows Steffi and her family with limited means as they desperately seek gold for her wedding, which hinges on the dowry. When nothing else works out, they take gold jewellery from PP Ajesh, a small-time gold dealer. However, the family is unable to pay back the full amount and Steffi leaves with her husband Mariyano (Sajin Gopu), leaving Ajesh with no choice but to follow them.
Even as Ajesh reaches her in-laws' house in his quest for his gold, Steffi refuses to part with the jewellery as her marital relationship depends entirely on it. A daring Steffi admits to him that their act is unscrupulous, but challenges Ajesh to take the gold if he can.
After a series of dramatic incidents, Mariyano comes to know about the borrowed gold jewellery but refuses to give it to Ajesh. In a subsequent face-off, the stout Mariyano stabs Ajesh. Steffi, who comes to know of her husband’s cruel act, has a change of mind and tries to find the whereabouts of Ajesh’s family with her brother. They realise that Ajesh is also from a poor background, and only has a mother and sister.
But despite being seriously injured, Ajesh returns and once again challenges Mariyano. Steffi then meets Ajesh and apologises to him. As they interact, it is evident that both Ajesh and Steffi are concerned about the well-being of one another. It is one of the most beautiful moments in the film.
In the climax, Ajesh dares Mariyano at the church festival that he would reclaim his gold. He also tells Steffi that he would like to meet her before he leaves that notorious land. After a muddy fight between the two, Ajesh is able to bring down Mariyano and retrieve his gold too.
A triumphant Ajesh returns to the church and finds Steffi waiting for him. In their sarcastic banter that belies their romantic feelings, Ajesh tells Steffi that he can join her if she is going to Kollam.
The final scenes show Ajesh and Steffi in a boat, as he tells her that a woman looks better without her gold (Pon).
Though the film doesn’t specifically show Ajesh and Steffi getting together, it hints at their growing affection for one another, leaving open the possibility of the two uniting in a later setting.
