Filmmaker Mani Ratnam's magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan 2 continues to captivate audiences in theaters, receiving more positive reviews compared to its predecessor. However, the film fell short of meeting the box office expectations set by its prequel, causing disappointment in several regions across India.
While the producers managed to make profits, the commercial reception of the film didn't fulfill the industry's hopes of it becoming the first Tamil film to gross Rs 1000 crore in ticket sales . This setback poses a significant blow to the Tamil film industry.
For example, Ponniyin Selvan 2 was released on over 800 screens in Tamil Nadu and took a strong opening there. However, the movie didn't sustain its bullish run at the box office. Ponniyin Selvan 1 created a new record by becoming the first film to earn Rs 200 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. However, PS 2 has only managed about Rs 115 crore in ticket states in the state so far.
Despite the mixed box office performance, Ponniyin Selvan 2 has maintained a steady run in several cities. As the film approaches its 30-day mark in theaters, the filmmakers are now gearing up for its digital premiere. Reports suggest that the movie will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video this Friday, but it will be offered on a rental basis rather than included in the subscription plan.
The Ponniyin Selvan film series has been the most ambitious project in Mani Ratnam's illustrious career. His dream of adapting the beloved Tamil novel of the same name, written by iconic author Kalki, for the silver screen dates back to the late 1980s. Over the past four decades, Ratnam has come close to realising this vision, but various challenges, including technological limitations and market readiness, hindered its materialisation.
Ponniyin Selvan boasts a stellar ensemble cast, including Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prakash Raj, Jayaram, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, R. Parthiban, Rahman, Lal, and Vikram Prabhu. The music for both parts of the film was composed by Oscar-winner AR Rahman.
