Mani Ratnam, Elango Kumaravel, and B. Jeyamohan penned the screenplay for their upcoming 2023 film Ponniyin Selvan: II, popularly known as PS-2. Mani Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah are producing the film through their respective companies, Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions. It's the follow-up to the first film in the Ponniyin Selvan film series, Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022), which was adapted from Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1954 novel of the same name. PS-2 has finally made its debut on Prime Video, over a month after its first release in theatres.
Starring Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, R. Sarathkumar, Jayaram, Prabhu, Sobhita Dhulipala, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Rahman, and R. Parthiban, the film boasts an impressive ensemble cast.
While making the announcement, Prime Video wrote on Instagram, "Step into the world of grandeur and intrigue as this epic saga continues! #PS2onPrime, watch now. Available in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam."
968 AD. The Pandyan assassins are regrouping to end the Chola dynasty once and for all. The powerful Chola princes now face an enemy coalition consisting of the Pandyas, the Rashtrakutas, and other Chola foes. The tragic fate of Aditha Karikalan, whose heart was long lost to the vindictive Nandini, and the rumours of Ponniyin Selvan's death at sea are also at play.
As the Chola kingdom faces danger, Ponniyin Selvan continues to pursue prince Arulmozhi Varman (who would become emperor Rajaraja I) and his family. It was supposed to be one movie, but it ended up being two that were shot simultaneously.
The COVID-19 pandemic twice interrupted production on both halves, which ended on September 16, 2021. Cinematography by Ravi Varman, editing by A. Sreekar Prasad, and production design by Thota Tharani complement the score by A. R. Rahman.
Film critics praised the film's direction, music, visuals, and performances of the cast and a satisfying conclusion to the saga in their reviews of Ponniyin Selvan: II, which opened in theatres worldwide on April 28, 2023, in standard, IMAX, 4DX, and EPIQ formats but was generally considered inferior to its predecessor.
