Ace cinematographer Ravi Varman, who has cranked the camera for Mani Ratnam's dream project Ponniyin Selvan: I, has shared a BTS picture of Karthi. Karthi plays Vallavaraiyan Vanthiyathevan, the brave and adventurous commander of the Chola army, who later goes on to marry Aditya Karikalan's sister Prince Kundavai. The cinematographer captioned the picture, “#ps1 @karthi_offl #picoftheday #photography #photooftheday #selfie #shotoniphone (sic)."

Ponniyin Selvan is an adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy's novel of the same name and the film has been written by Jeyamohan. The star cast includes Vikram (Aditya Karikalan), Jayam Ravi (Arunmozhivarman), Karthi (Vallavaraiyan Vanthiyathevan), Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (Nandini) and Trisha (Kundavai).

During the launch of the first single, Karthi had stated that the shoot for both portions- Ponniyin Selvan part 1 and 2- have been wrapped up, that too in a matter of 120 days. Ponniyin Selvan was originally supposed to be a standalone film, but was later decided to make it into two parts. The production was stalled twice during the pandemic. The film was shot across India and certain portions were canned in Thailand as well.

Calling Ponniyin Selvan a dream film, Karthi said, "Only Mani Ratnam sir can pull off a film of this stature. Ponniyin Selvan is a film where every Tamilian knows the story and the characters in it, but want to know how the film is made. It belongs to every single Tamilian." Earlier Karthi had revealed during the teaser launch that the film is a gift for future generations. He said that though he didn't much clue about his character in the film, he had heard his mother talking about him."

Music for the film is by AR Rahman. Editing is by Sreekar Prasad and art direction is by Thotta Tharani. The film is all set to hit screens worldwide on September 30 in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi. Ponniyin Selvan is bankrolled by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.
