​That Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan has emerged as one of the biggest successes of the director is something we know already. The film has been breaking one record after the other and is now about to hit the Rs 500 crore mark, thus becoming one of the most profitable films made in the history of Tamil cinema. To ring in the success of the film, the film's music composer AR Rahman and director Mani Ratnam, threw a bash for the singers who were part of the PS: 1 album. Pictures of the same are doing the rounds on the internet. In the meantime, AR Rahman himself is basking in the reception of its music. Interestingly, the film also marks 30 years of collaboration between Mani Ratnam and AR Rahman, ever since they teamed up for Roja (1992).


Singer Ahmed shared pictures from the party and wrote on his social media page, "Last night was surreal! Got the opportunity to attend Ponniyin Selvan 1's success party! Meeting my most favourite @arrahman sir & Maniratnam sir together & interacting with both of them was truly a dream come true moment! #PonniyinSelvan #ARRahman #Maniratnam @MadrasTalkies_ (sic)."


Ponniyin Selvan, which has been made in two parts, is the film adaptation of the revered five-part novel of the same name by writer Kalki. The plot revolves around the battle for the Chola throne after the reigning king Sundara Cholar falls ill. The star cast includes Vikram (who plays Crown Prince Aditha Karikalan), Trisha (Ilaiya Piratti Kundavai) and Jayam Ravi (Arulmozhi Varman) as the children of Sundara Cholar, Karthi plays the spy and commander of the Chola Army Vallavaraiyan Vanthiyathevan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan plays Nandini Devi, the Queen of Pazhuvoor. The supporting cast includes Prakash Raj, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Jayaram, Shobita Dhulipala, Sarathkumar, Parthiban, Prabhu, Kishore, Nasser, Mohan Raman, Lal, Jayachitra, Ashwin Kakumanu, Vikram Prabhu to name a few.


Cinematography is by Ravi Varman, art direction by Thota Tharani and editing is by Sreekar Prasad. The film has been produced by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions. The shooting for the second part has been wrapped up and is likely to be released in the summer of 2023.
