Within a month of its theatrical release, Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 is out on OTT. Mani Ratnam's magnum opus based on the Chola Dynasty has dropped on Prime Video and is available for rent to users. To watch the film, Prime Video members have to pay Rs. 199 for the next seven days. Yes, from November 4, 2022, Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 can be watched by all members of the streaming platform.

The plot of this historical drama is set in the Chola Empire in 969 AD when Pandiya rebels swear to shed royal blood and Chola chieftains plan a mutiny. There are also riddles, political unrest, and the threat of war. Will the rebel Pandiya Amarabujanga or the wild prince Aditya Karikalan succeed the hermit prince Arunmozhi Varman as the new king?

Ponniyin Selvan: I is a monumental historical action drama that Mani Ratnam, Elango Kumaravel, and B. Jeyamohan co-wrote. It is the first of two movies based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan. It was made by Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah under the banners of Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.

Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Rahman, R. Parthiban, and Lal are among the ensemble cast members of the movie.

AR Rahman composed the soundtrack, while Ravi Varman is the cinematographer, A. Sreekar Prasad edited the film, and Thota Tharani did the production design.

Ponniyin Selvan: I garnered positive reviews from critics who commended the directing, cast performances, musical score, graphics, and fidelity to the book when it was released in theatres on September 30, 2022, in both conventional and IMAX formats.

The movie made over Rs. 500 crore and broke multiple records at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2022, the fourth-highest Tamil film of all time, the 15th-highest Indian film of all time, and the third-highest Indian film of the year 2022.
