Ponniyin Selvam, directed by Mani Ratnam, is based on a Tamil epic by the same name

The makers of Ponniyin Selvam have announced their return to Tamil Nadu after the completion of the Madhya Pradesh schedule. The team was shooting in Madhya Pradesh extensively in August. A scene from the location was leaked on social media that went viral. The schedule in Madhya Pradesh included several fight scenes and songs that were shot in a palace. It was a short clip of the shooting of the song sequence that was leaked online.
The team will be heading for Ooty in Tamil Nadu for the final schedule of the shoot. The shoot is going on at a brisk pace under the helm of veteran director Mani Ratnam. Mani Ratnam previously directed Chekka Chivantha Vaanam with Aravind Swamy, Vijay Sethupathi, Arun Vijay and Silambarasan in lead roles. The movie depicted the power struggle between three sons of an underworld don. The movie was praised for cinematography and the performance of the ensemble cast but was criticised for the lousy storytelling.
Meanwhile, all the movie industries and fans are awaiting this magnum opus by the classic hitmaker Mani Ratnam. The film features a star-studded cast that includes Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Lakshmi, Trisha in lead roles. The movie is based on Ponniyin Selvan, written by Kalki. The epic spans over years of the fictitious ancient history of Tamil Nadu, focussing on the period of the Chola Empire. Vikram plays the main role of Aditya Karikalan with Karthi as Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan and Jayam Ravi as Arulmozhi Varman or Ponniyin Selvam after whom the novel is named.
The movie will be released in two parts titled, PS I and PS II. The story has over 50 characters including 15 principal characters. Several actors like Prakash Raj, Nassar, Rahman, Prabhu, Parthiban, Sarathkumar, Lal, Vikram Prabhu have been roped in to play pivotal roles aside from the main cast. The movie is bankrolled by Lyca Productions and is expected to get the struggling theatre industry back on the map in the new normal.
There were plans earlier to cast Vijay as Vallavaraiyan and Mahesh Babu as Arulmozhi Varman. However, the plan was shelved due to the film budget and the high fees of the actors.
