Prajwal Devaraj’s maiden tryst with the horror genre, Rakshasa, directed by Lohith H, was meant to be one of the 11-12 Kannada films releasing in theatres this week. However, with only a day to go before its date with audiences, the team has announced its postponement. Technical difficulties have been cited as the reason for Rakshasa being pushed ahead. It will now be in theatres on March 7.

What is Prajwal Devaraj's Rakshasa about?

Rakshasa has been described as a time-loop horror tale, in which Prajwal plays a cop and father, desperate to save his young daughter from an evil force. He must race against time to unravel the dark mystery that threatens his family. According to Lohith, the concept of time-loop in a horror film is novel for Kannada cinema.

Prajwal is joined by Sonal Monteiro, Arna Rathod, KS Sridhar, Shobraj, among others, on the cast. According to the official synopsis, Rakshasa’s story unfolds in a police station, where a captured and sealed Brahmarakshasa ends up in an evidence locker. What happens when it is inadvertently unleashed forms the crux of the tale.

Rakshasa sees Prajwal experiment with a genre outside of his comfort zone – commercial cinema and has him collaborate with Lohith, who, with successful horror films like Mummy Save Me and Devaki, has set expectations for movies written and directed by him. Rakshasa is one of two films the dup have worked on in recent times.

Lohith has also directed Prajwal in a film called Mafia, which is, however, not based on his script. The film is yet to release in theatres, while Prajwal was last seen in the forgettable Gana, which was the Kannada remake of the Telugu film Play Back.

Rakshasa was initially called A Tale of Devil, but the team later settled on Rakshasa, given that Challenging Star Darshan’s upcoming next is titled Devil. Ajaneesh Loknath is on board as music director, while Jebin C Jackob served as cinematographer.
