Pratik Gandhi is set to portray Mahatma Gandhi in a new series from Applause Entertainment. Gandhi is based on historian Ramachandra Guha’s books - Gandhi Before India and Gandhi - The Years that Changed the World.

According to a press release shared by the makers, the show will portray “the period of Indian Independence through the eyes of our greatest freedom fighters” and will be shot across Indian and international locations. Production will begin sometime in 2023.

Gandhi’s travels took him far and wide from India to England and South Africa, so we are likely to see the story pan out across these countries. Though he’s widely known for spearheading non-violent political movements, the show will take audiences across the lesser known stories of his life. The show will also shed light on the stories about his compatriots and peers who helped steer the freedom struggle and helped shape contemporary India.

In a statement, Guha said that Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution revolutionised the world and he has left a long lasting legacy “that still sparks the most intense debates.”

“I deeply believe in the Gandhian philosophy and his values that echo simplicity in its purest forms. Personally too, I strive to achieve and imbibe many of his qualities and teachings in my daily life. Moreover, playing the role of Mahatma is very close to my heart ever since my theatre days and now it is a huge honour to yet again essay the role of this legendary leader, on screen,” said Pratik. He added that he believed this role to be a “huge responsibility.” Pratik said that he is already familiar with the Mahatma’s journey ever since his time as a theatre actor.

This is not the actor’s first outing in a biographical series. He previously played stockbroker Harshad Mehta in Sony LIV’s series Scam 1992 which made him a household name instantly. The actor was recently seen in Amazon Prime Video’s Modern Love: Mumbai, in a short directed by Hansal.

Additional details on the show’s cast, director, writer and release date are still awaited.
