The announcement, though, has fans wondering what the narrative will be like, given that Prem’s character in his milestone 25th film had a tragic ending.

When Nenapirali Prem’s milestone 25th film, Premam Poojyam, hit theatres, it received mixed reviews, with some dumbing it down for its archaic take on love, while others lauded it for the divine depiction of the emotion. The film was the directorial debut of neurologist Raghavendra and told the story of a bright young medical professional and his quest for love.
Prem was paired with newbie Brinda Acharya and Aindrita Ray in the film. Spoiler alert - his character dies at the end of the film, owing to… wait for it, broken heart syndrome. And yet, director Raghavendra confirms that Prem will not only be a part of the sequel, but this instalment will also be about divine love worthy of worship, while also adding commercial elements to the narrative. Speaking to an English daily, the director said that he’d planned a sequel even while writing the first film and added that there will be action, entertainment, and humour too. The filmmaker also addressed the hero’s death, stating that he’s got an ace up his sleeve that will connect the two films seamlessly.
Even before the release of Premam Poojyam, the makers had announced another film – a multi-crore project – with Prem in the lead, about the life and times of Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa. Now that the announcement of a Premam Poojyam 2 has come, it appears that the biopic will be on hold for a while. In fact, there was a rumour that the sequel will be kickstarted as early as February, with a Valentine’s Day launch. Raghavendra, though, says that a launch date has not been fixed.
