Pride Unprejudiced: MUBI to celebrate Pride Month 2023 with LGBTQIA+ cinema

From Please Baby Please, Great Freedom and Knife + Heart to And Then We Danced, Keep Punching and Pashi, MUBI has announced a host of critically acclaimed movies centred on the LGBTQIA+ community, ahead of Pride Month 2023. These films will be streamed on the platform as part of a special film season, called Pride Unprejudiced.

“Stepping out of the celluloid closet, LGBTQ+ representations in cinema have become increasingly robust, diverse and multidimensional. From intimate character studies to boldly experimental features, the eclecticism of queer cinema not only illuminates the richness of our collective human experience but also daringly subverts filmmaking conventions,” the OTT platform stated, adding, “Just like the delightfully broad spectrum of genders and sexualities, cinematic renderings of queer experiences are cultural mosaics that rise above attempts at classification and categorization. Reflecting this formal dynamism, our electric offering of LGBTQ+ cinema is a celebration of queer artistry and history, spotlighting urgent social issues and the sheer pleasure of unapologetic queer joy.”

From coming-of-age stories to thought-provoking dramas and empowering documentaries, the lineup showcases a broad range of genres and themes. The films “explore the vast spectrum of sexual orientations, gender identities and cultural perspectives from celebrated filmmakers across the globe showcasing their unique storytelling and cinematic artistry”.

Among the other films to be steamed as part of Pride Unprejudiced include Happy Together, All About My Mother, Hide And Seek, Is It Too Much to Ask?, Becoming Male In The Middle Ages, Two Drifters, Brothers Of The Night, Wet Sand, Playback, Shiva Baby and more.
