Malayalam superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran’s third directorial with Mohanlal in the lead – L2: Empuraan – is already proving to be packed with surprises. The movie, which is already touted to be the most expensive Malayalam film to be ever shot with locations in the US and the UK, is among the most-anticipated projects, but the filmmaker asks fans to expect something totally different from the 2019 film Lucifer.

Empuraan, which is scripted by Murali Gopy, is the second instalment of the Lucifer franchise and will have the original characters of Mohanlal’s Stephen Nedumpally aka Khureshi Ab’ram as well as Prithviraj’s Zayed Masood and those played by Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier and Indrajith Sukumaran returning.

Mohanlal won't turn up in mundu for Empuraan fight scenes: Prithviraj

Prithviraj, in a recent interview with Film Companion, revealed what to expect from the movie. While some of the leaked sequences from its shoot in Ladakh, Atlanta as well as New York, USA, revealed, the film will have more of Mohanlal as Khureshi Ab’ram.

And this is also what the director promised as he told fans not to expect “Mohanlal to turn up in mundu and beat up people in a closed down factory” – referencing the ‘mass’ action scene from Lucifer where Stephen surprises his aides by showing another side of him. Prithviraj, who had faced flak for including a special dance number in Lucifer, also teased fans that he might include a Bollywood-style end title song as part of the movie. “I don’t even know the film I’m making is the sequel that people expect of Lucifer,” said Prithviraj.

Incidentally, the end title song of Lucifer – Empuraan rendered by Usha Uthup, had not just hinted at the second instalment’s name but also took the audience through Khureshi Ab’ram’s past in the film. This is what Empuraan would delve deeper into.

The team has reportedly finished shooting only “20% of the film” and is set to begin shoot its remaining portions in India. This will kick off with a month-long schedule in Chennai that will feature most of its major actors. Empuraan is set to be a 2025 release.

Meanwhile, Prithviraj has two big releases coming up in the next few weeks including Blessy’s Aadujeevitham that is set to hit theatres on March 28 as well as Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff’s Bade Miyan Chotte Miyan that will be an Eid release on April 10. The Malayalam actor plays the antagonist in the latter.
