While most industries have already had a slew of direct-to-OTT releases in the past year, Malayalam has only had a few, the notable ones being Drishyam 2, Joji and Irul. Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Cold Case could be the latest to join the list.
The movie, directed by Tanu Balak, is an investigative thriller that was shot in Thiruvananthapuram when the lockdown rules were eased last year. While reports suggested that Amazon Prime Video had already bought the OTT rights of the film, a source from the production team tells us, “We are still in talks with the streamer. Nothing has been finalised yet. The news that the rights have already been sold is false. The film was made for theatre and we have to make several changes in terms of its sound for OTTs.”
The makers of Fahadh Faasil’s Irul, which had also opted for a direct-to-OTT release on Netflix a few months ago, is also backing Cold Case. Prithviraj will be seen playing a cop named Sathyajith in the film, which is scripted by Srinath V Nath. Apart from the star, the movie also has Aditi Balan.
Meanwhile, Prithviraj has also completed the shoot of Manu Warrier’s Kuruthi, which was gearing up for a theatrical release when the ongoing lockdown in Kerala was announced. The socio-political thriller has an ensemble cast featuring Roshan Mathew, Murali Gopy, Shine Tom Chacko and Srinda.
Prithviraj is also part of Rathish Ambat’s Theerppu and Dijo Jose Antony’s Jana Gana Mana, both of which are yet to be completed.
