Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Gold was billed to complete a hat-trick of hits for the superstar this year. The movie, which had a lot of hype considering it marked Alphonse Puthren’s comeback directorial after seven years and also featured lady superstar Nayanthara in a pivotal role, got off to a good start at the Kerala box office on its first day.
According to industry trackers, the movie collected close to Rs 2 crore at the box office on Thursday. This is still Rs 1 crore short of his previous movie Kaduva, which marked the highest initial day collection for a Prithviraj-starrer at the Kerala box office.
Gold opened to over 1,300 theatres worldwide on December 1. The film, which has a bevy of supporting actors including Baburaj, Krishna Sankar, Mallika Sukumaran and Saiju Kurup, also took in good numbers in centres outside Kerala.
The film collected about Rs 1.3 crore in the UAE, Malayalam cinema’s second best market outside of Kerala, while its rest of India collections grossed about Rs 25 lakh. The latter could go up, considering that the Tamil version of the movie will hit theatres only on December 2 and Alphonse has a massive fanbase in Tamil Nadu, thanks to his previous superhits Neram and Premam.
Though Gold’s collections are still a letdown because of the hype it had, the movie managed to clinch the record of being Prithviraj’s second highest grosser on the first day. Sources from the team had last week claimed the movie had already done pre-business of over Rs 30 crore.
The movie’s OTT rights have been sold to Amazon Prime Video, which is expected to stream the movie by the end of this year or early in January. Surya TV had bought the satellite rights of Gold, which is co-produced by Prithviraj Productions and Magic Frames.
