SSMB29: Priyanka Chopra to play female lead in SS Rajamouli-Mahesh Babu film? Here’s the scoop

SS Rajamouli’s film with Mahesh Babu is one of the most anticipated projects from the Telugu industry. Not much is known about the project, tentatively titled SSMB29. But in an exciting update, reports claim that none other than global sensation Priyanka Chopra Jonas has been roped in to play the female lead in Mahesh Babu-Rajamouli’s film. As per a report on Pinkvilla, Priyanka Chopra, who was previously seen in the American series Citadel, will return to star in an Indian project with the Rajamouli directorial, which is billed as a period action-adventure film.

“SS Rajamouli was looking for a female lead with global presence, and who better than Priyanka to play the lead role,” the report stated, quoting a source privy of the developments.

As per the report, the RRR director held several meetings with the global sensation over a period of six months and they are on the same page. The report further stated that PeeCee is excited to collaborate with a ‘maverick’ like Rajamouli and partner with Mahesh Babu ‘to create an adventure like never before.’

Priyanka has been reportedly offered a 'well-crafted role' in the film, which will start rolling in the summer of 2025.

If the report is indeed true, the Rajamouli directorial will mark Priyanka Chopra’s return to Indian cinema after a hiatus of six years. She last starred in the 2019 Bollywood film The Sky Is Pink along with Farhan Akhtar. The news has got fans excited who have been enthusiastically sharing the news on social media

When will SSMB29 release in theatres?

Rajamouli, who shot to national fame with Baahubali: The Beginning in 2015, won global appreciation with the Oscar-winning RRR. As the director is known for mounting his projects on an epic scale, expectations are running high for his film with Mahesh Babu. Now with Priyanka Chopra too reportedly coming on board, the anticipation for the project has scaled new heights. 

However, the project could take time and is unlikely to see a release in the next year or even in 2026. Mahesh Babu, who was last seen in Trivikram Srinivas' Guntur Kaaram, is also preparing for the role. Along with physical training, the actor is also working on the dialect.
