It’s the season of re-releases, it would seem. In May, a slew of decade(s)-old Tamil films are coming back to theatres and Kannada cinema, is joining this race. With multiple phases of the Lok Sabha elections pending to be held in May, no major star-led films are coming to theatres, making this an opportune moment for re-releases of hit films in movie halls equipped with the latest technology.

Fans of the late Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar, who got to see a re-mastered version of his film Jackie on his birth anniversary in March were looking at seeing him on the big screen again only next year, when Appu gets a re-release, but there’s a treat for them this month. The 2017 action drama Anjaniputra is being released again on May 10.

The A Harsha directorial, paired Puneeth with Rashmika Mandanna. The film was the Kannada remake of the 2014 Vishal-led Tamil film Poojai, and had Mukesh Tiwari reprising his role as the antagonist. The film’s ensemble cast also includes Ramya Krishna, P Ravi Shankar, Sadhu Kokila, Chikkanna, Akhilendra Mishra, V Manohar, Seetha Kote, Ratnakar Upadhyay, Giri Shivanna, among others.

When the film released, it opened to mixed reviews, but went on to become a commercial success nevertheless. Harsha presented a fairly straight remake of the original, wherein Puneeth played an heir to a cloth manufacturing group, who is disowned by the family matriarch owing to a misunderstanding. How he reunites with his family forms the crux of the story.

Anjaniputra was Rashmika Mandanna’s second film after Kirik Party. The actress did Chamak, Yajamana and Pogaru thereafter, with the latter being her last straight Kannada film. While watching Puneeth on the big screen is, no doubt, a big draw, the film is available to stream on OTT. Should you fancy a rewatch, Anjaniputra is available to Sun NXT.
