For the last few weeks, there have been ongoing discussions about whether Diljit Dosanjh and filmmaker Honey Trehan can present their film Punjab ‘95 on the big screen as they intended. The actor and filmmaker have been defending their latest project against the CBFC’s censorship, as the board has recommended around 120 edits. Both Dosanjh and Trehan insist on releasing the uncut version, as they want their full story to reach the audience. Based on a real-life figure, the film has become a hot topic, and both Dosanjh and Trehan have stated they will not endorse the movie if any cuts are made.
Following Udta Punjab, Punjab ‘95 marks the second time a Diljit Dosanjh film has faced challenges with the CBFC. During an Instagram Live session, Diljit expressed his firm stance, saying, "I hope the film gets released in India soon. I will only support it if it is released in its entirety, uncut. If the picture is released uncut, I will stand by it; otherwise, it holds no meaning."
He emphasized that any modifications would dilute the film’s impact and message, something they do not want. Honey Trehan echoed this sentiment, stating that if the CBFC’s proposed cuts were made, his name would not appear as the director in the credits. Trehan said, "Chaddiyan kallan. Punjab ‘95 will not have my name as director if there are any cuts. I do not support the unreasonable and politically motivated demands of the CBFC. I stand by my film and my team, and I will never betray their trust. Justice will prevail, and I hope the world sees the uncut version soon. Immense respect for Jaswant Singh Khalra ji's martyrdom."
The film revolves around Jaswant Singh Khalra, a Sikh rights activist known for exposing the extrajudicial killings of Sikh youth by Punjab police in the early 1990s. Khalra was also renowned for his humanitarian work and was a revered figure among the oppressed. The trailer provides insight into his life and work, offering a gripping portrayal of his bravery.
Produced by Ronnie Screwvala's RSVP, Punjab ‘95 features an ensemble cast, including Arjun Rampal, Kanwaljit Singh, and Suvinder Vicky. Diljit Dosanjh has already announced a worldwide release of the uncut version on February 7, 2025, across various countries, except India, where the release remains on hold due to the ongoing dispute with the CBFC.
