The Kannada film Puppy, by debutant director Ayush Malli, came to theatres in early May and told the story of a lost puppy and the boy who found him, set against the backdrop of migrant workers from North Karnataka in Bengaluru and their daily struggles. The film opened to positive reviews, with the sincere look at migration being specifically called out as one of its major highlights.
Puppy, which stars Jagadeesh Koppla, Aditya Sindhanur, and Rithwik Ballari, has now made its way to OTT and is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video as of June 27, 2025. Puppy is the latest Kannada film to drop on Amazon Prime Video, following Naale Rajaa Koli Majaa, Veera Chandrahasa, Firefly, Forest, Royal, Mithya, Vishnu Priya, among others. A very small fraction of the Kannada releases in a year make it to OTT.
In fact, of late, the streamer has been rarely accepting films on exclusive deals, giving filmmakers the option to sell their films elsewhere too, which is why, movies like, say, Maryade Prashne and Laughing Buddha are on Prime Video and Sun NXT. Some don’t even get that luxury and directly make it to the store for rental only.
Puppy follows a migrant family from North Karnataka looking for a greener pasture in Bengaluru. The parents, daily-wage labourers, enrol their son Parshya at a makeshift school for children of migrant workers, where he meets Adi and strikes a quick friendship.
The boys have fun bunking school and selling homing pigeons that fly right back to them after a sale. When they then see a poster about a missing puppy and the promise of a Rs 10,000 reward, and find the little dog, what happens thereafter forms the crux of the narrative. Will Parshya and Adi return the dog in time, what with the Covid-19 pandemic looming large and the family forced to return home?
