Malayalam superstar Mammootty is gearing up for his first straight OTT release with debutant director Ratheena PT’s Puzhu in April. Since the pandemic, the megastar had maintained a stance that was pro-theatres but the recurring lockdowns and the massive queue of films lined up for release in cinema halls seem to have prompted the actor too to look towards OTTs.

Puzhu, which marks the first collaboration between Mammootty and Parvathy Thiruvothu, is touted to be an intense crime thriller. It’s also the first time that the superstar has teamed up with a female director in his career spanning five decades.

The film will have the superstar playing a role with grey shades. Puzhu’s composer Jakes Bejoy had earlier told OTTplay that it’s been a while since the actor has attempted something like this. “The film will showcase his acting prowess. It will have him in a performance like Vidheyan more than the ‘mass’ Mammukka,” he said.

Puzhu is set to revolve around a father and son, and the underlying trust issues that follow. The posters of the movie, which have been released online, also hint that while it largely focuses on the family dynamics, it will also have crime elements.

Mammootty in a press statement issued by Sony LIV had said that the story of the movie had excited him the most and is a step at him trying to keep reinventing himself. The movie, which is set to drop on Sony LIV, is co-produced by Dulquer Salmaan and S George.

On convincing Mammootty to opt for a direct-to-OTT release, Dulquer had exclusively told OTTplay, “I think he sort of understands that there are certain kinds of cinema right now that would make sense for the OTT viewer, who has the luxury of time and is in the mood to watch that kind of film.”

Puzhu is currently streaming on Sony LIV.
