"Now I have a machine gun. Ho Ho Ho!" If you are well aware of this famous dialogue, it would be safe to assume that you know the reason why Die Hard is a Christmas classic and why it’s one of the most-watched films during Christmas.
Released in 1988, the first film Die Hard, directed by John McTiernan, written by Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza, is based on the 1979 novel ‘Nothing Lasts Forever' by Roderick Thorp. It became a classic upon release, garnering four Academy Award nominations, which pushed Bruce Willis’, who played the main character of police detective John McClane, career into the stratosphere.
The story revolves around how detective John McClane, defies all odds, and rescues the hostages of the Nakatomi Plaza Hotel from a group of East German terrorists led by Han Gruber (Alan Rickman), and saves Christmas. Decades after the release of the film, it now enjoys the status of one of the greatest action films of all time.
The popularity of the film pushed the makers to create multiple sequels over the years. Starting with Die Hard 2, the second instalment in the franchise which came out in 1990, received good reviews but lacked the charm or the magnanimity of the first film.
Subsequently, Die Hard: With a Vengeance, the third film came out in 1995 with Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, and Jeremy Irons in the lead which propelled the film to be the highest-grossing film of 1995.
A decade later, the fourth film Live Free or Die Hard came out in 2007. The film did well at the box office and tried to reboot the series. The fifth and final film of the franchise, A Good Day to Die Hard released in 2013 lacked the core elements of the first film and was received poorly by the critics.
