The day 22nd of August is widely regarded as the day Madras was founded after the Vijayanagara Empire sold the village of Madrasapattan to the East India Company on August 22nd 1639. The festival which took form in 2004 has since been celebrated every year and has become immensely popular over the years thanks to the idea set in motion by journalists Shashi Nair, Vincent D’Souza, and S Muthiah. The festival is celebrated through various art exhibitions, food festivals, radio programs, and other cultural events celebrating the history as well as the future of the city.
