The Godzilla franchise is one of the longest-running film series since its debut in 1954. It is based on the fictional Kaiju character which has, over the years, gained a cult following. After the success of Godzilla (1954), the Japanese media production company, Toho, went on to deliver sequels while transforming Godzilla’s character from a monster to a creature that can actually save mankind. This popular fictional character was presented as a metaphor for the real-life destruction due to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.
Over the years, Godzilla became the most conspicuous symbol of Japanese pop culture after the success of Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964), Son of Godzilla (1967), Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972), Godzilla 2000: Millennium (1999), Shin Godzilla (2016), among others. However, the American production, Godzilla (1998 film) turned out to be a disappointment and was panned by critics .
A reboot of Toho's Godzilla franchise, Godzilla (2014) was released under the American production company, Legendary Pictures, that led to successful sequels, Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019 film) featuring Millie Bobby Brown alongside Vera Farmiga, and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021). It is part of the shared ‘monster universe’ developed by Legendary Pictures. The underrated Kong: Skull Island, starring Tom Hiddlstone and Brie Larson, also share the same universe.
