R. Madhavan appears to have taken a dig at Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, who has been making headlines for being the ‘fastest Bollywood actor to complete a film.’ Akshay is also one actor who hasn’t stopped working or taken a break, so to say. Meanwhile, Madhavan invested years behind making his film, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect.

The actor spoke to Zoom about the importance of taking a break. At the same time, he also pointed out why actors tend to work in a certain way. He said that the industry boxes these actors up and so, they tend to follow a pattern. “These types of films work, you have to constantly work to sustain in the market, you need to have a six pack or eight pack and learn how to dance and only then you can be a superstar,” Madhavan said in sarcasm.

Calling them ‘walking sticks’ the industry uses, Madhavan also points out how these formulas only had 8% success. “It’s not an industry, just a gamble, right?,” Madhavan asked the reporter.

“In today’s world, I know for sure that people are just jumping into one project from another. They are making projects just because somebody’s dates are available or some director is available or a script is ready and hoping that you finish a film in three months. I think it is a sure-shot recipe for a disaster,” he shared.

It is to be noted that Akshay has been working in the same pattern for years – releasing four films a year. He has continued doing that even in the post-COVID times but unfortunately, that formula has not worked for him now. The actor has seen back-to-back flops, barring Sooryavanshi (2021).

Madhavan pointed out how movies like RRR, Baahubali, Pushpa, Gangubai Kathiawadi, KGF: Chapter 2 and even The Kashmir Files have been loved at the box office. “All these have been a labour of love,” Madhavan pointed out. He added that every actor associated with the project has been a part of it for years. “They’ve stayed with the character, worked very hard, put their life on the line for years,” he deciphered.

Madhavan also explained how the audiences have changed in the post-COVID times. “Don’t come with your charm in theatres that your previous films have worked and now you have a script that is beautifully decorated but is a pre-COVID era story,” he figured.

The actor-turned-director then shared that he takes a break in order to understand things around him. He also questioned why people are not making movies on boys from Lucknow who started the metaverse.

Madhavan tells the tale of NASA scientist Nambi Narayan through his latest film, Rocketry. The movie, which marked the actor’s debut as a director, released in theatres on July 1 and has received positive acclaim from all corners.
