Aanand L. Rai was left fuming after he learned about an AI-generated happy ending for his movie Raanjhanaa. The filmmaker had recently shared how the original ending had impacted his viewers, and now, he had learned that AI got involved to change the ending for the movie's re-release on August 1, 2025. This did not sit well with him. The producers have now responded to the same.
Aanand L. Rai was upset about Raanjhanaa ending being changed to a happy ending with the help of AI. He even threatened to go the legal way after learning about the tampering of his work. The producers have responded to the same. According to Screen, these makers stated that they are 'using AI to present a respectful creative reinterpretation of original.' Whether that hints at a happy ending or not still remains uncertain. Reportedly, the new print is sold to Tamil Nadu distributor, Upswing Entertainment. This, Aanand L. Rai feels, is the producers 'testing new waters.'

In an earlier interview with the portal, Aanand L. Rai had questioned how the producers could meddle with emotions. "It’s a tragedy. That’s an emotion. How can you meddle with emotions? The voice of the film lies in that ending," the filmmaker had said, adding, "Next thing we know, they may change the climax of Sholay (1975) by keeping both Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra) alive."
Raanjhanaa ending sees Dhanush's Kundan and Sonam Kapoor's Zoya both being aware that he would be killed, but Kundan showing up to the rally held by Abhay Deol's Akram Zaidye anyway. Kundan takes the bullet and ends up fighting for his life as Zoya cries for him. In that moment, Kundan's mind decides between waking up and fighting or giving up and trying in his next birth cycle. He chooses the latter. This scene, where Kundan eventually gave up but wanted to search for his true love like Zoya in his next life cycle, affected people deeply.
