Rachita Ram in Coolie: ‘Surprise package that no one saw coming’, say netizens

Kannada actress Rachita Ram turned out to be the best kept secret of director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie. While it had been rumoured for a while that she was a part of the Rajinikanth starrer, and was an antagonist to boot, neither did the actress confirm it, nor did the film team, until the trailer came out. Even then, there was just a passing shot of her and the actress was not included in any of the film’s promotions, including the audio launch.

Rachita Ram in Coolie gets more screen space than Upendra

When Coolie released on August 14, the question, of course, was if Lokesh Kanagaraj had done justice to the two stars from Kannada cinema – Upendra and Rachita – like Nelson Dilipkumar had done for Shivarajkumar in Jailer. Going by the comments on social media, it seems a lot of audiences were pleasantly surprised by the character arc that Rachita was given.

“The surprise element was Rachita Ram —she got the role of her life”, “Rachita was out of syllabus’, “Rachita was the surprise package; didn’t expect that”, “Rachita had more screen space than Uppi”, were among the many comments praising the Kannada actress. While no one found fault with her performance, some were not convinced with her arc of the story and her motivation. They also reckoned that her role as Kalyani, is an extension of Agent Tina in Vikram.

Coolie is Rachita’s first Kannada film, and while it does not give her a full-fledged role, her performance has grabbed eyeballs. When she was earlier asked about being a part of Coolie, she’d said she had been approached, but offered no further details, insisting instead that her first film outside of Kannada has come after she dedicated a decade to Sandalwood. The actress, who was last seen onscreen in Sanju Weds Geetha 2, has a slew of Kannada releases lined up, including Cult, Rachayya and Ayogya 2, among others.
