After a dearth of releases in Malayalam in April due to Ramzan and big-ticket films such as KGF: Chapter 2 and Beast, May seems to be a crowded affair. Already close to four films have been lined up for each Friday of the month and according to rumours, both Nivin Pauly and Asif Ali might end up with two of their films releasing the same week.

Nivin has Thuramukham and Asif has Kuttavum Shikshayum gearing up for a May release. Both the movies are helmed by Rajeev Ravi. While Kuttavum Shikshayum has been confirmed for May 27 release date in theatres, the makers are yet to take a call on Thuramukham, which has been long-delayed. The latter, a period thriller set in the 1940s was supposed to hit theatres in April 2020 was postponed to May 2021 and then in January 2022, only to be pushed due to the surging COVID-19 cases and then due to an issue with the distributors.

Kuttavum Shikshayum, meanwhile, had completed shooting after the first lockdown in 2020. The police investigative thriller, based on real incidents, also stars Sunny Wayne, Alencier Ley and Sharafudheen in pivotal roles. The movie was shot in Kerala and Rajasthan.

In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Asif talked about how the team had shot the movie. “Somedays, when we are asleep in the hotel, Rajeevettan would wake us up and ask, ‘How long does it take you to get ready? Let’s film a scene’. That’s how he shoots the film. We didn’t have a huge crew; it was just 20 of us who went to Rajasthan to shoot the movie,” he said, adding that the movie is based on police officer Sibi Thomas’ service story.

Meanwhile, Abrid Shine’s time-travel fantasy satire Mahaveeryar, which has both Nivin and Asif in the lead, is also eyeing a May 20 release date. While there has been no official confirmation on this, Nivin is expected to have at least one release next month.
