Kerala State Film Award-winning actress Rajisha Vijayan is one of those few actresses who have been working on stellar movies in other languages, while also being active in the Malayalam industry. Just last month, she was part of two theatrical releases – Kolla and Madhura Manohara Moham.
In an exclusive chat with OTTplay, Rajisha reveals if there’s an advantage of how she is positioned as an actress in various industries – Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu – in terms of the roles that are coming her way.
“I think your positioning brings you different kinds of films,” she says. “For instance, if you are someone who is just starting your career, you can’t be sure that all types of characters will come your way. But the more you prove yourself and the more different roles you portray, even if some don't work, the more varied the characters you are offered will be. So, you have to take risks. But there’s no formula to that. Sometimes you do a movie and you get offered something extremely different. There’s a bit of destiny involved too.”
The Sardar and Jai Bhim actress says that the more films an actor does “in a particular language, the more they also get to know your range”. But Rajisha also adds that it’s easy if one wants to focus on one film industry.
“If you want to just stay relevant in one industry, you can choose that route. I am not saying that it’s wrong. If that’s the perspective, it’s easy to get films just to increase the count,” she explains. “In my case, I am particular that I don’t want to do movies just for the sake of it. I don’t want to do films where I am just a doll or a character that just comes and leaves.”
She clarifies that the screen time of her character doesn’t bother her. “Even if it’s just for five minutes, I want to be there, if it makes sense for the script. If the character is in any way different from the roles I have done so far or pushes me as an actor, it’s all the better. That’s all I am looking for,” Rajisha adds.
The strategy is also working for her. “It’s not like I am sitting at home. I am getting projects in Malayalam and I will do those. I am not very particular about which language to work in and I am not thinking about where I will get good work,” she concludes.
