Rajik Thakur, who was recently seen in IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, is enjoying the positive feedback to his web show. Helmed by Anubhav Sinha, the series premiered on Netflix. Although it got mired in controversy, the show, based on the 1999 IC 814 plane hijacking, received a thunderous response from critics and viewers. In a recent interview with Mid-Day, Rajiv recalled the real-life tension in Amritsar when the incident happened.
For those who are unaware, Rajiv Thakur played the role of chief, one of the five terrorists involved in the IC 814 hijack incident. On being asked if he had any memory of a real-life hijack, the actor recalled how the hijackers took IC 814 flight to Amritsar. At that time, Rajiv was in college and rehearsing for a youth festival. Since his college was close to the airport, Thakur noticed an airplane flying unusually low.
"I mean, the flight was flying much lower than necessary, and we were thinking that the plane looked very big. While pondering over this, we went outside for tea, and by the time we returned, everyone was shouting, 'Run, run, anything can happen here!'," recalled Rajiv.
The actor further recounted that commandos arrived on the spot and informed everyone that the flight had been hijacked. It was followed by Rajiv reaching home and sharing the information with his parents. "The family said it had been taken to Pakistan," he added.
Apart from that incident, Rajiv witnessed the 1984 riots when he was at home in Amritsar. "I am from Amritsar, so my entire childhood was spent amid terrorism. The events of '84 happened right in front of our eyes," said Thakur.
Meanwhile, Anubhav Sinha's IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack also featured Vijay Varma, Dia Mirza, Pankaj Kapur, Naseeruddin Shah, Patralekhaa, and others. Did you enjoy watching this series on Netflix? Share your thoughts @ottplayapp on X.
