After a successful Netflix project, Black Warrant, Vikramaditya Motwane is all set to direct a sports biopic, as per reports. The film, based on the life of former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly, is reportedly being headlined by Rajkummar Rao. In an earlier interview, Ganguly confirmed that Rajkummar will play his role. Now, a recent report mentioned shooting details and added that the preparation will be intense.
Mid-Day reported that Rajkummar Rao is all set to lead the sports biopic on Sourav Ganguly, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane. If things work out, it will mark their reunion after their critically acclaimed survival thriller, Trapped (2016).
A source close to the project added, “Vikramaditya has been working on a sports film, based on a real-life athlete. It explores a protagonist that is different from the underdog usually seen in sports biopics. Raj liked the core idea. Plus, he knows Vikramaditya will push his creative boundaries.”
The source further shared, “The biopic will be a swift two-month shoot, the kind Vikramaditya is known for. That said, it will be preceded by intense prep of a few months.”
During an earlier press conference, Sourav said, "From what I've heard, Rajkummar Rao will play the role (the titular role)...but there are issues of dates...so it will take more than a year to hit the screens."
Before Rajkummar, actors such as Ranbir Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana's names were linked to the biopic but now it seems that Rao will lead the project.
Reports indicate that the biopic will focus on Sourav Ganguly's administrative roles as BCCI President and his influence on Cricket Association of Bengal. Some reports also suggest that groundwork has already kick started and the filmmakers met Sourav Ganguly at Eden Gardens.
Rajkummar is one of the most versatile actors. On the work front, he will be seen next in Bhool Chuk Maaf, co-starring Wamiqa Gabbi. Apart from this, the actor also has the gangster drama Maalik in his pipeline, set for a theatrical release on June 20, 2025.
Meanwhile, Bhool Chuk Maaf which was supposed to be released on April 10, has been postponed and the film will now hit theaters on May 9. The film is set in Varanasi and centers around a couple, Rajkummar and Wamiqa, who are about to get married.
