Raksha Bandhan only made Rs 8 crore nett on its first day, which is a disappointing amount given the holiday, which, even though it is not a huge festival, should have helped the movie do better given that it was released at the perfect time.
According to Box Office India, while Gujarat/Saurashtra, CI, and Rajasthan were the best for this movie, Delhi NCR and East Punjab were the best for Laal Singh Chaddha. These locations are often better for Akshay Kumar movies, and the holiday was also promoted here. Except for Sooryavanshi, this movie's opening day in Gujarat was comparable to that of any other original Hindi film, but the holiday is significant there as well.
Meanwhile, as per production figures, Raksha Bandhan made about Rs. 8.20 crore on its opening day.
The trading website also reported that the film may have benefited more from the holiday because it is more popular in the Hindi belts, which could imply that it lost more ground to Laal Singh Chaddha on day two. The movie is mostly geared toward family audiences and has minimal appeal for younger viewers, making it a word-of-mouth movie. However, the current issue is that the film that needs to be picked up is having a difficult time working, and in this case, it is difficult to pick up after a holiday.
It will be interesting to see how the movie performs on Sunday, when, if public perceptions permit, it may score in the Hindi belts once more.
Aanand L. Rai's family comedy-drama film Raksha Bandhan was written by Himanshu Sharma and Kanika Dhillon. It has Deepika Khanna, Smrithi Srikanth, Bhumi Pednekar, Sadia Khateeb, Sahejmeen Kaur, and Akshay Kumar as the main cast.
The film has clashed with Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer Laal Singh Chaddha, which is the Hindi adaptation of Forrest Gump.
