In this age of pan-India films, one would imagine that remaking one such movie that was released across the country in different languages, would not be an option. And yet, the makers of 777 Charlie, which came out in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi and is continuing to have a good show at the box office, 25 days since it released, has got two enquiries for remake rights.
Speaking at the 25-days celebration, Rakshit Shetty, who is also the producer of the film, confirmed that two offers were on the table. “We are in discussion with them and have not decided on a final course of action, since our version will be on OTT at some point in all five languages. But, honestly, 777 Charlie is not a film that can be done again. If at all someone attempts to remake it, it would be best if Kiranraj only does it. No one else will have the clarity that this team had. Having said that, I must add that 777 Charlie was a passion project for Kiranraj and I am not sure if he will have the same craze for it a second time around. 777 Charlie can only be remade by someone who has the same vision and craze as Kiranraj and if there is a person like that, he/she may as well write their own story and make a film in a similar genre. Overall, in the larger scheme of things I am not sure if remakes will work, but if they insist on the rights, then why not? It’s more money in our kitty,” he said gleefully.
777 Charlie, which released on June 10, has been sold to Colors Kannada and Voot Select for its Kannada satellite and digital rights. Amazon Prime has picked up the digital rights for the other languages. At an earlier press briefing, Rakshit had said that the agreement with the digital partners was for 48 days from its theatrical release. So, although a date has not been announced, the film is expected to be available by the end of July, or latest, early August. In the interim, the makers of hopeful of remaining in theatres for another 25 days, as the collections in Karnataka continue to be good.
